WHY N.Y.E.T?

With the tragic surge of violence in schools and communities nationwide, claiming the unlived lives of young people, devastating families and communities, killing dreams and hopes, it becomes obvious that we as a society, have, and are continuing, to fail our youth, desperately. This is a critical and scary time in our schools, communities and homes. There is a desperate cry for help and attention being voiced within the acts of violence, suicide, drug use, gang involvement, teenage pregnancy, high school dropout rates and complete disregard for human life. It is vital that we as a society go beyond merely addressing the destructive behavior, to uncovering, then destroying, the root of the self-hatred, hopelessness and self-destructive choices. We will never change the fruit, unless we first destroy the root, of the problem.

So, the question becomes … what are we going to DO about it?

We’ve talked about it. We’ve prayed about it. We’ve attended funerals of young people gone too soon. We’ve watched mothers and families grieve, as we’ve grieved along with them. Yes, we are certainly concerned. Yet, concern without action, changes, nothing. How long will we continue to sit back enabling their self-destruction by our simple, yet so profound, lack of intervention? Many of us think that these problems just affect “other” communities, “other” schools, “other” families. We see it on the news happening “everywhere else”, never imaging it could reach our neck of the woods. When the harsh reality is that the crisis is hitting closer to home everyday. No school, no child, no community, is immune. We are together in this state of emergency, plaguing schools and communities all across this country.

To encourage our youth to realize & lay hold of “their” world of possibilities
To activate higher self-esteem and healthy self-image
To establish goal setting as a way of life
To positively influence decision making and everyday choices
To help attendees establish their personal action plan
